History of Winthrop

Winthrop was incorporated in the mid-20th century, but years earlier, it was used as a gold-mining town. Years prior to that, it was used by Native Americans who were inhabitants of the area.

It was named after Theodore Winthrop, a prominent writer and explorer. Over the years, the town transitioned into a timber and ranching community before eventually becoming a popular tourist destination.

As you'll notice as soon as you get there, Winthrop embraces its Old West heritage, and the entire town has been designed to reflect a Western frontier ambiance. The buildings in the town center feature western facades, wooden boardwalks, and rustic charm. It's like stepping back in time to the late 1800s.
