Location and Getting There
Smith Rock State Park is located in the town of Terrebonne, Oregon, about 15 miles northeast of Redmond. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon and is a popular destination for camping at Smith Rock, rock climbing, and other outdoor activities.
If you are coming from Portland, you will take US-97 South until you reach Redmond. From there, take US-126 East for 11 miles until you reach Terrebonne.
If you are coming from Eugene, take I-5 North until you reach Albany. Take OR-34 West until you reach US-20 West. Follow US-20 West to US-97 South, and then follow the same directions as above.
If you are coming from Bend, take US-97 North until you reach Redmond. From there, take US-126 East for 11 miles until you reach Terrebonne.
Once you are in Terrebonne, follow the signs to Smith Rock State Park. Campgrounds near Smith Rock include Spring River Campground, Skull Hollow Campground, and Crooked River Campground. All of these campgrounds offer plenty of amenities for your camping needs.
History of Smith Rock
Smith Rock State Park is a beloved Oregon landmark and one of the most popular climbing and hiking destinations in the state. This incredible park has been around for centuries but only officially opened as a public park in 1984. Prior to this, Smith Rock was a place that had been used for Native American ceremonial purposes and was known as Animal Village.
Smith Rock is located in the high desert of Oregon, surrounded by Juniper trees and rock formations known as "tafoni" which are caused by erosion over time. The unique features of the area make it an ideal destination for camping at Smith Rock. In addition to its spectacular geology, Smith Rock offers stunning views of the surrounding Cascade Mountains.
The campgrounds near Smith Rock have changed over time, but today, there is only one designated campground within the park itself and several more within a few miles of the park.

The Bivy (or Bivouac) Campground
The Bivy campground is Smith Rock's only campground within the park's grounds. The campground is walk-in only and only has space for tent camping.
